One of the most successful gold mining stocks of recent times was Brancote Holdings, which  discovered a massive vein of gold at their Esquel  project in Patagonia, in the  south  of Argentina.  Its shares could have been bought for 8p in late 1998 and were eventually taken over by Meridian Gold at 227p in July this year, by which time the market value had soared to £142m.   Before that take-over was completed Brancote's directors, Richard Prickett and Bill Humphries, spun out Brancote's other interests into asmall OFEX traded company called HPD Resources.  There they have taken the key roles of chairman and managing director respectively and hold a combined 9.1% stake.
