One of the rate setters at the Bank of England and a professor at the London School of Economics, and one of only two members to vote “hold” last month, notes that producer price inflation (PPI), that is the costs to companies providing goods and services, has fallen from an eye-watering peak of 19.6% in July 2022 to just 2.9% in May 2023 - its lowest for over 2 years. She says PPI has historically been the most reliable lead indicator of what inflation will do next. There is usually a lag of one or two quarters but it is clearly set to fall.
