Engineering firm Charter has issued a profit warning, which it blamed on lower production and falling prices in the steel industry and a weakening in both export dependent economies such as Germany and emerging market economies of Russia and Brazil. Against this background, ESAB, its welding consumables business, saw a 35% reduction in volumes in Europe and the USA in May, although other regions have been more stable.In the light of this further deterioration Charter has responded with more overhead reductions, including two permanent and two temporary factory closures.
