H&T, one of the UK's largest pawnbrokers, is quickly establishing itself as one of the clear winners of the credit crunch. Tougher lending criteria by the high street banks means both subprime consumers and even those with better credit records are increasingly turning to its flexible loans, which are secured on gold jewellery and involve no upfront fees. But there is also icing on the cake in the form of the sharply rising gold price, which is boosting sales of jewellery and scrap gold and the result has been a blow-out set of half-year results, which sent brokers racing away to upgrade their forecasts.
