When Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, declared war on payday lender Wonga, through increased competition and an education campaign to teach school children the vagaries of too much debt, it struck a chord with the general public fed up with its usurious interest rates of 5853%, albeit since reduced to 1501% after regulatory intervention. However, not all short-term lenders are “bad” and H&T, a pawn broker that allows customers to borrow for up to six months by pledging gold jewellery as collateral, “only” charges 8% a month (or 119% APR) and is well-placed to capitalise on the nine million people who are locked out of standard borrowing markets.The pawn broking sector has been extremely lucrative ...
