While the gloom merchants fret about how high unemployment will go once furlough payments are withdrawn, some businesses actually thrive in these conditions. Back in the early 1990s recession, shares in Betterware, which sold low ticket household products through a network of self-employed door-to-door salesmen, rocketed from 20p to around 250p as its profits soared on the back of freshly laid off workers flocking to sign up as distributors. These distributors received a commission each time they sold a product from its catalogues, building a useful income for them while for Betterware it was a cheap way of acquiring new customers.
