The rate cut in May has kick-started improved trading for retail tile specialist Topps, which announced its H1 results. Sales were up 4.1% to £127.8m, with the Topps Tiles brand achieving 3% like-for-like sales growth. Operating profit rose 19% but increased bank debt and lease charges limited pretax profit increase to 3.2%. Encouragingly, Q2 accelerated sales (+4.4% year-on-year from 3.3% in Q1) while the start to H2 has gained again to +9.5% during the first seven weeks. CTD, which will become a trade only business, achieved £15.1m sales and posted a £1m loss.
