In the 1990s, Topps Tiles, the UK’s largest specialist tile retailer, was a stockmarket darling, given that the shares increased an incredible 14-fold from the time of its market listing in June 1997 right up to its peak of 310p almost 10 years later. While the shares have been battered recently due to the pandemic, Topps caught my eye after posting some punchy trading updates with retail like-for-like sales rising 16.5% in Q4 ’20 and 19.6% in the first 13 weeks of FY’21 (to 26 December) as bored consumers gave their homes a makeover. Importantly, its 342 stores are still allowed to open during lockdown 3.0 with enhanced cleaning and hygiene controls in place and customers are able to transact at the trade counter and talk to staff ...
