Back in October 1962 when the Cuban missile crisis came within a whisker of starting World War III, the UK still spent as much as 7% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on defence spending but as part of the so-called peace dividend, that has fallen to just 2%. But the worm has now clearly turned and global military spending has topped US$2 trillion for the first time after seven years of increases. And following on from Ukraine, fears of a conflict with China are also growing, so it’s no surprise UK defence stocks have rallied.
