With encouraging signs that the UK’s vaccination program has put the economy on a surer footing, several restaurant firms have reported strong trading since the grand reopening in May. One such company has been Restaurant Group, owner of the Wagamama pan-Asian cuisine chain as well as a rump of legacy brands, airport concessions and pubs. In the 15 weeks ended 29 August, Wagamama enjoyed a startling 21% increase in like-for-like sales versus 2019 (i.e. pre-pandemic). That translated into an £11m EBITDA profit in H1 despite extended Covid-19 closures in the period and in response the company has upgraded full year guidance towards just below break-even for 2021, with eps of 4.2p forecast for next year.
