Old-timers may recall that a key reason behind the success of former AIM-listed, restaurant operator, Ask, whose shares soared from just 20p in 1996 to 220p in 2004, was that it was able to launch Zizzi, a second brand, which could sit in close proximity to its original eateries without cannibalising their sales. That's more than could be said for its bitter rival, Pizza Express, whose shares hit the wall after it ran out of “lower hanging fruit†and was forced to pitch in secondary locations, which just could not generate the required returns.
