Buying turnarounds can be notoriously hard to time and when it comes to the Restaurant Group, we were perhaps a little early calling it at 400p in our October ’16 issue. The company was a high flyer at one point enjoying a prospective PE rating in the mid 20s and a peak share price of 735p in 2015, reflecting its status as a market leader and strong cash generator with an ability to churn out regular double-digit eps growth through aggressive expansion. But eventually its halo slipped as its long-time successful CEO was replaced and the newby embarked on a disastrous strategy of increasing prices, abolishing fixed price meal deals and removing popular dishes (such as chicken pasta), which caused uproar amongst its clientele.H ...
