Marstons - Shares hit new high of 140p

In spite of heavy snow in January, pubs operator Marstons released a solid update in which like-for-like sales in its managed pubs increased 1.2% in the 16 weeks to 19 January (they were 2.1% ahead in the 15 weeks to 12 January, which preceded the snow). Trading over the festive period was strong including growth of 5.8% in the key three weeks to 5 January.  Operating margins are slightly ahead while plans for the new build pubs remain on track. Meanwhile, in the tenanted pubs side profits are estimated to be 2% ahead of last year reflecting continued success in its franchise model, which has now been rolled out to 550 pubs.
