Marston’s has reported decent trading over Christmas and New Year with like-for-like sales in the managed pubs up 2.9% over the five weeks to 2 January. Although the subsequent bad weather resulted in underlying sales rising only 1.5% for the 16 weeks to 23 January, sales have since returned to pre-disruption levels. Operating margins rose slightly, thanks to tight cost control and reduced cost pressures. Meanwhile, in the tenanted division like-for-like profit per pub fell 4.9% (an improvement on the 5% decline seen in the first eight weeks), while after stripping out disposals the average profit per pub fell just 1.9%.
