While Marston’s have slipped back after hitting a new high of 105p at the end of April, there are good reasons for optimism, with the recent hot weather and World Cup likely to stimulate business. Half-yearly results were respectable enough given continuing pressures on the consumer, with pretax profit up 0.5% to £27.8m, on unchanged turnover of £309m. On the managed pubs side, operating profit rose almost 5% to £25.5m thanks to like-for-like sales rising 1.4% and a 0.5% increase in operating margin. Eight new-build pub restaurants have now been opened, with average weekly turnover of £23k surpassing its target of £20k.
