Topps’ weak share price belies a strong operating performance with first half results ahead of expectations. Adjusted pretax profit rose 37% to £7m (Peel Hunt forecast: £6.5m), in spite of gross margin declining c.1.5% to 56% reflecting the rising cost of sales (gas, shipping, tight raw materials supply).Its Retail division increased like-for-like sales 23% on a two year basis, supported by further store optimisation (300 by this year-end), category expansion (including outdoor and luxury vinyl) and format development, which have contributed to +23% sales density growth over the past three years.
