Against very tough comparatives last year, which included hot weather and the World Cup, Marstons achieved a creditable 2% rise in like-for-like sales in the ten weeks to 23 July, while for the 42-week period underlying sales growth was 2.9%. Operating margin also improved compared to last year. Ten new pub restaurants were completed while the performance of new builds continues to beat expectations. Meanwhile, in the tenanted pubs side, like-for-like profits grew 0.5% compared with last year thanks to the rollout of its franchise accredited retail agreement.The shares have been weak because of general fears of a slowdown in consumer spending but now look cheap on a prospective PE of 7.9 and yield of 6.7%.
