After the significant disposals of its poorer quality tenanted pubs in 2013 and 2014, which improved the overall quality of its estate but depressed short-term earnings, Marstons has started this year in good shape. For the 16 weeks ended 24 January like-for-like sales in its premium & destination side (managed pubs and new builds) rose 2%, helped by a strong Christmas and New Year’s Day, while margins were also up.
