Essentra, a maker of components such as caps and cable ties, was formed following its de-merger from FTSE-100 listed Bunzl in 2005 but its roots go back to the 1940s when Bunzl started manufacturing cigarette filters at Jarrow. In spite of the political hostility to tobacco companies, Essentra has fashioned a 50% share of third party filter manufacturing, helped by a move into specials (slims, flavoured, shapes, carbon coated) capturing growth in Asia while it’s also entered bio-degradable and non-combustible (heat not burn), which is meant to be less toxic.While this legacy business still makes around a quarter of profits, my main interest lies in its other two divisions, components and packaging.
