Tough comparatives alongside a scheduled plant shut-down meant specialty chemicals group Elementis' half year results showed an 11% fall in operating profit to US$67.5m on sales which fell 3% to US$388m. However, strong cash flow meant that although it spent US$75m on acquisitions and special dividends it only swung from net cash of US$30m to net debt of just US$8.5m.In specialty products, which makes additives that control and enhance the performance of liquids, sales grew by 5% to US$247m but profits were virtually unchanged at US$51.6m, reflecting start-up costs associated with the new decorative coatings plant in North America and the integration of the Hi-Mar acquisition.
