There's an old investing adage that selling “picks and shovels†to miners in a “gold rush†is more profitable than being a miner yourself and this may explain why shares in Playtech, the largest provider of software for online gambling websites, has just hit an all time high. In particular, investors have just latched on to the fact that the American State of New Jersey has voted to allow gambling on the internet for the first time since it was banned nationwide in 2006. New Jersey is the third such state to take this step and investors are now betting that the US as a whole will follow suit with new federal laws, given its pressing need to raise taxes to fund its appalling budget deficit.
