Hostelworld is the latest to warn of the financial impact of COVID-19. In Q1 20, it now expects there to be a reduction of €5m in EBITDA, up from previous estimates of €3m-4m. However, Hostelworld is well-capitalised with net cash of over €20m. Although €2.5m of that represents customer deposits, the group is endeavouring to convert these into customer credits. It has also cancelled its final dividend of 2.1 cents (savings €2m).Encouragingly, measures are also being taken on costs; the most variable of the marketing costs (paid performance) is being reduced and optimised to match short term revenue, while it’s also reviewing ways to ease staff and admin costs.
