Self-storage is an industry that has grown in good times and bad and the Covid-19 and post pandemic eras have exacerbated this trend as people look for a cheap way to de-clutter (in the face of rising property rents) or require a temporary base while renovating, moving home or because of another “life” event. Industry figures show the number of self-storage facilities has grown to almost 2,000 (c. 50 million sq. ft), which works out as average storage rental space per person of 0.74 sq. ft. Analysts expect to continue to see the sector play catch-up with the more mature US market (49,200 outlets, 1.9 billion sq. ft), which has almost eight times greater penetration at 5.9 sq. ft. per person, thereby underwriting many more vintage years. ...
