When Jeff Bezos created Amazon in 1994 it originally just sold books online and in spite of giving himself a 3 in 10 chance of success, sales breached US$1bn for the first time in 2001. Although profits were initially held back by his ground breaking strategy of selling unrelated products, such as electronics, movies and groceries, through the same website, this strategy was so successful that sales soared to US$386 bn and profits of US$21 billion in 2020, while the shares, which could be bought for just US$2 in 1997, are now worth an incredible US$3,159.
