President Trump’s repeated calls for NATO members to spend more on defence - alongside rising global tensions - should be positive news for Babcock. More defence spending means greater demand for the ships, submarines and support services at the core of its business. The company has suffered a setback, with a £140 million provision and revenue reversal linked to cost and delivery issues on the first two Type 31 frigates for the UK Royal Navy. However, this looks like a temporary issue rather than a structural problem. Excluding Type 31, Babcock delivered a strong set of results, with revenue up 10% to £5.27bn and operating profit rising to £433m as margins expanded to 8.2%.
