Babcock - Beats eps expectations by 10%

Having peaked at almost £13 (a 4-bagger from the GP2 purchase price of 323p), shares in defence contractor Babcock retracted even though interims beat EPS forecasts by 10%, albeit benefiting from some timing factors. On sales ahead 7%, Babcock’s operating profit grew 19% to £201m (consensus expectations: £187m), with operating margins up a superlative 0.9% to 7.9% and within an ace of its 8% full year target. EPS rose 21% to 28.5p vs consensus of 25.2p.  The stand-out drivers were Nuclear (sales +14%, operating profit +18% to almost £90m), particularly Cavendish (clean energy, defence, civil decommissioning, +25% year-on-year) and Hinckley Point.
