A main write-up at 71.5p in 2019, the shares jumped to 233p during the Pandemic but, like many consumer stocks, it succumbed to two profit warnings in February and June, dragging them down to 54p. But I think it’s worth a second look at this level. The business is a supplier of consumer goods such as small domestic appliances (including cookware), houseware, audio and laundry; as the CEO once said: “John Lewis-equivalent merchandise at Asda prices.” In recent years it’s increased its percentage of own brand from under 50% to over 80%, with an own-brand stable that includes Salter, Beldray, Russell Hobbs, Kleeneze and Intempo. That’s strengthened the business, yet leverage (net debt / EBITDA) still fell from 1.4x that year to 1.1x ...
