Babcock - Massive fall in leverage sparks buy-back

Shares in defence contractor Babcock continue to be red hot, rising another 100p to 1150p after finals unveiled a hat-trick of good news, not just a profit beat but a raise in guidance; and the launch of an unexpected £200m share buy-back. On sales up 10% to £4.83bn, underlying operating profit rose 17% to £363m, with the operating margin jumping from 5.4% to 7.5%. Underlying EPS rose 23% to 50.3p, boosted by a lower interest charge. Free cash flow of £153m reduced leverage sharply with net debt / EBITDA falling to just 0.3x, hence the buy-back.
