One of the most dramatic turnarounds ever seen by investors has been stationery retailer, WH Smith, which under the auspices of Kate Swann was transformed from a business losing £72m in 2004 and in danger of going bust to one that made a profit of £108m last year. Along the way its shares have soared from less than £3 to almost £10 although even that doesn’t factor in several special dividends, as Smiths benefited from Swann’s decision to ditch low margin entertainment ranges like CDs, DVDs and video games and move towards more profitable newspaper, magazines and stationery products.
