Smiths News released a cheery update, noting pretax profit for the year to August 2013 should be strongly up on last year and in line with expectations. For the 19 weeks to 12 January revenues increased 2%, driven by a 5% rise from its Consortium division (education consumables) and a 4.4% gain from Bertrams (book wholesaling). This was partially offset by the original newspapers & magazines distribution side, which, as expected, fell 1.9%, or 4.7% on a like-for-like basis.While shares in rival John Menzies, 710p have race away to new highs Smiths News have sedately inched ahead since last December's tip at 153p but based on JP Morgan Cazenove's eps forecasts for 21.4p this year still trade on a prospective PE of just 8. ...
