Shoezone, a  “disruptor” selling cheap but stylish shoes in low rental locations, announced interims in line with pretax profit unchanged at £1m on sales of £73m (H1 ’18: £73.7m). In a competitive market the group maintained profitability by increasing product gross margin by 1.4% to 62% while increasing multi-buy promotions (e.g 2 for £20). This, alongside ongoing range improvements, led to increased average transaction value by 4.8% to £13.91.  However, the main focus is to increase the proportion of large, so-called “Big Box” stores, which enjoy higher profit contributions of c. £100k versus just £30-£35k for its smaller stores.
